at the end of my 2009, the austrian / german "team arogn" congregated again to participate in the outdoor games in interlaken. seppi dabringer has taken over my role as the team captain and is doing a great job! day one startet with pretty cool hangglidig action. click on the pic to see the "making of" to our new film "challenge of fate"
the contest season ended for me in verbier just as it startet in sochi - alright but not perfect in really challenging snow conditions the final of the freeride world tour took place on the north face of the mythical bec de rosses in verbier
just 3 days after being super disappointed in tignes i had a reason to smile again: at the freeride world qualifyer in nendaz, switzerland i first won the qualification on day one and then also the final on the beautiful north face of the "mont gond".
on the third stop of the freeride world tour i landed on a hidden rock on my first big drop right after the start and was send into some highspeed cartwheels, before i managed to get on my feet again just before the next cliffband. at least this year i do not have to blame myself for crashing....

what to say....a week in california and the highlight was definitely NOT the snowboarding in squaw valley but rather the surfing in santa cruz!
the day after arriving in squaw (thanks kip and tal for putting us up!) we did a pretty jetlagged competition run on a little "face" called silverado, with around 150m vertical drop and changeable snow conditions. i rode a nice line which was original but not as spectacular as necessary to be in the top 5 (see last blog entry for details)
then it started snowing and nina, matthias "hauni" haunholder and me went to san franciso for some city life.
after epic snow conditions here in california one week ago it rained all the way up to 3000 meters at the beginning of this week, keeping us from riding the challenging tram face for the moment. so day one of the competition took place yesterday on a small face called "silverado"
our whole TEAM ARGON worked like hell to get our movie "THE DEVILS RIDE" done. 7 days to get 5 sports filmed plus pack it up in a good story was amazing challenge for everybody. thanks go out to my team
yesterday the freeride comp in fieberbunn happened. it was a great day for everybody, powder and blue sky plus a challenging venue on the marokker north face.
i am sitting here on moscow airport with mitch tolderer and eric themel on the way home from the 2009 freeride world tour event number one and a week full of riding in russia. krasnaja poliana is a little ski resort near sochi with not only great mountains but also one of the longest and oldest row of chairlifts in the world. it takes about 50 minutes to go from the parking lot to the top at 2.300 m, from where you can see the black sea! as a warmup we got a meter of fresh pow, so the riding on monday and tuesday before the contest was siiiiick. steep treeruns all day long made for tired legs at night.
... for the world tour in russia i climbed the brandjoch, the most impressive skiable peak of the "nordkette", which is the dominant mountain chain right above innsbruck
tomorrow night mitch tölderer, eric themel and me will catch a plane to moscow, where we meet our good friend vasily from mtv russia. on sunday we move on to sochi for the first comp of the FREERIDE WORLD TOUR 2009. i am super excited to met all the riders from around the world again. as for the comp, it will be hard to do better than last year, when a victory made yet another dream come true - like so many dreams that snowboardinghas helped me to realize over the past decade! the freeride world tour 2009 my begin!
